Our longest and most complete itinerary, built for travelers who want to see Ladakh properly rather than rush through it, from Leh's monasteries to Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake.
Welcome to Ladakh. You'll land at Leh Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport, one of the highest operational airports in the world at over 3,500 meters. After transfer to the hotel, the whole day is kept free for acclimatization, which matters more than sightseeing on day one.
After breakfast, visit the old summer capital of Ladakh at Shey Palace and Monastery, then Thiksey Monastery, often called Little Potala for its resemblance to Lhasa's Potala Palace. The day continues to Hemis Monastery, the second oldest and richest in Ladakh, with a small museum holding some of the region's oldest manuscripts and artifacts.
Ladakh's contrasts are on full display today as you cross Khardung La into Nubra Valley, with the Zanskar range to the south and the Karakoram range to the north.
The drive to Pangong Lake takes around six hours, following the Shyok River through dramatic mountain scenery. Pangong stretches roughly 130 km along the India-China border, with about 30% on the Indian side.
Tso Moriri, in the Changthang region, is one of Ladakh's most beautiful and sacred high-altitude lakes, home to a surprising range of flora and fauna.
Return to Leh via Chumathang, Upshi and Karu, passing several small villages along the way before a stop at Thiksey Monastery.
A lighter day after an adventurous stretch of travel, spent seeing the sights closer to Leh.
After covering eastern Ladakh, today heads west through Sham Valley and towards Kargil, following the Indus River to Khaltse village. Along the way, the landscape near Lamayuru shifts into what's often called Moonland for its otherworldly terrain.
The return to Leh follows the same route, with time for sights missed on the way out. A short stop at Hunderman village, on the banks of the Drass River and under Pakistani control until 1971, offers a glimpse into the region's Baltistan heritage. Alchi Monastery, roughly 1,000 years old and built on flat ground rather than a hillside, is known for its exceptional wall paintings.
